Play Dirty (2025) is an action-thriller following Parker (Mark Wahlberg), a professional thief seeking revenge after being betrayed and left for dead during a heist. He teams up with fellow criminal Grofield (LaKeith Stanfield) and the traitorous Zen (Rosa Salazar) to pull off a massive, $1 billion heist against a South American dictator and the New York mob.
"Black has no such issue, his writing here rhythmic and thoughtful, packed with specific detail and brilliantly timed humour, someone constantly finding ways to stuff more into scenes that would have otherwise been left plain and perfunctory in the hands of others."
"It’s breezy, it’s witty, it’s fast-paced and packed with light subversions of common crime tropes. It’s even got old-fashioned spectacle, in the form of a train wreck and a car chase in the middle of a horse race..."
"It’s also there in the casual viciousness of the scene where Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield, as a criminal associate who’s so laidback he’s almost floating on air (until his anger explodes, at which point you need to duck for cover), try to get Shaloub’s sleazy bitcoin-obsessed assistant (Nat Wolff) to tell them where the Lady of Arintero is. Though they’ve got him at gunpoint, he’s literally too scared to tell them because he thinks they’re going to throw him off a building. (He’s right to be worried.) That extra dollop of destruction is what makes the film funny and gives it momentum."
